Carol of Lights Dec. 3

Henderson State University will present the annual Carol of Lights program on Monday, Dec. 3. The sidewalks of the south lawn will be lined with about 2,000 luminaries, creating a beautiful seasonal scene.

The festivities will begin at 7 p.m. in front of Arkansas Hall and will feature music by the children from Davis-Baker Preschool and the Angelic Voices of Christ, along with a performance by the Arkadelphia Dance Prai‘z’e group. Dr. David Thomson will recite The Night Before Christmas, and Santa Claus will make an appearance and will be available for photographs. A reception will follow the program inside Arkansas Hall.

The event is free and open to the public.

Reddies’ great season ends

A large crowd showed up at Carpenter-Haygood Stadium to support the Reddies in their second-round playoff game.

Henderson State’s record-breaking season came to an abrupt end on Saturday afternoon as Missouri Western beat the Reddies 45-21 in the second round of the NCAA Division II playoffs on Ruggles Field at Carpenter-Haygood Stadium in Arkadelphia, Ark.

The Reddies, who were the undefeated regular-season Great American Conference champions, end the year with a 10-1 record, while Missouri Western, champions of the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletic Association, improves to 12-1 and will advance to the quarterfinals to play Minnesota State-Mankato next week.

Provost search finalists

A committee conducting the search for a new provost/vice president of academic affairs at Henderson State University has identified five finalists for the position. The candidates will visit the Henderson campus later this month and in December for interviews and to meet the faculty, staff, students and the community.

The finalists are:
• Dr. Risa E. Dickson, associate provost for academic personnel and professor of communication studies at California State University, San Bernardino
• Dr. Martin J. Eisenberg, interim dean, School of Arts and Letters, and associate provost at Truman State University in Kirksville, Mo.
• Dr. Georgia M. Hale, dean, College of Applied Science and Technology at the University of Arkansas – Fort Smith.
• Dr. Brenda S. Nichols, dean, College of Arts & Sciences at Lamar University in Beaumont, Texas
• Dr. Robert F. Scott Jr., dean and professor, College of Education and Technology at Fort Hays State University in Kansas.

Writing runs in the family

Henderson professor Dr. Travis Langley isn’t the only author in his family. Several months after Langley’s book about Batman was published, his son Alex’s first book was released. Alex, who earned his B.S. in psychology from Henderson in 2007, authored The Geek Handbook. And Alex’s brother Nick, a current graduate student at Henderson, provided the illustrations for the book. Alex’s wife Katrina, who graduated from Henderson in 2008 with a nursing degree, just published her first book entitled Action Movie Freak.

Nobel Prize lecture Nov. 27

Henderson State University’s science departments will present a free lecture on the 2012 Nobel Prizes in physics, chemistry, and physiology/medicine on Nov. 27 at 5:30 p.m. in Reynolds Science Center Room 127.

Science faculty will give an overview of the research that was recently awarded the Nobel Prizes. The lecture is open to the public. For more information, please contact Dr. Allison Harris at harrisal@hsu.edu.

Opera concert Nov. 26-27

Henderson State University’s Opera Workshop will perform the music of Stephen Sondheim on Nov. 26 & 27 in the Arkansas Hall Studio Theatre at 7:30 p.m. Both performances will include vocal solos and ensembles from Sondheim’s most beloved shows, including Into the Woods, Company, Sweeney Todd, Follies, A Little Night Music, and several others.

Tickets are $5 and students are admitted free with a school ID.

Choreography showcase Nov. 29

Henderson State University’s choreography class and the HSU Dance Company will present their annual Fall Choreography Showcase on Nov. 29. Dance students will present original works in progress, showcasing contemporary styles.

Many of the pieces will be selected by a panel for inclusion in the HSU Dance Company concert next spring. The audience is invited to offer feedback and ask questions.

McNair Scholars inducted

Henderson State University’s McNair Scholars Program inducted 10 new members at a ceremony on Nov. 1. The McNair program helps prepare low-income and first-generation or underrepresented undergraduates for graduate study at the doctoral level. The inductees are, front row from left: Charity Juenemann of Bismarck; Tanesha Eabron of Forrest City; Samantha Jones of Little Rock; Pearson Redmon of Lake Village; and Samantha Hunter of Sheridan. Back row: Bianca Lark of El Dorado; Shomari Hunter of Magnolia; Bree Vanley of Little Rock; and Cris Espinoza of Hope. Izhar Buendia is not pictured. Participants must have completed 45-60 hours, have a 3.0 minimum GPA, and intend to pursue a doctorate after graduation.

An EOC success story

When Bridgette Bass applied to receive services from the TRIO Educational Opportunity Center (EOC) at Henderson State University in 2005, she was unemployed, a single parent, and a college stopout. With assistance and encouragement from the EOC program, she graduated from Henderson in 2007 with a Bachelor of Business Administration degree with a marketing emphasis, and earned an MBA in 2009.

Bass’ determination and accomplishments led to her nomination and selection as the 2012 Arkansas TRIO Achiever. She received her award at the Arkansas Association of Student Assistance Programs Fall Conference in Little Rock in October. She will represent Arkansas at the Southwest Association of Student Assistance Programs in New Orleans this month.

Before the Battle

The Southern Bancorp Battle of the Ravine Rally attracted hundreds of people with an exciting line-up of activities held on Henderson’s intramural and band practice fields. Several races got the day started before the carnival cranked up. And there was plenty of food and music available. A pep rally got the Reddie fans fired up for the game. And various exhibits and attractions added to the great success of the event.

Reddies rout the Tigers

A Henderson State single-game record of 12,035 fans saw the high-octane offense that has been the 2012 Henderson State football team veer from their norm as a prolific passing attack to an offense that found a wealth of success on the ground to the tune of 305 yards on Saturday afternoon as they cruised to a 42-7 rout over cross-street rival Ouachita Baptist in the 2012 Southern Bancorp Battle of the Ravine.

The win for the Reddies (10-0, 8-0 GAC) not only gives them the coveted claim as the Southern Bancorp Battle of the Ravine champions, but it also gives them the outright Great American Conference Championship, an unbeaten and untied regular season for the first time in school history.

Big Band Ball at Barkman

The Barkman House, a big band and a dance floor set the stage for the Third Annual Big Band Ball Nov. 7. Sponsored by Henderson’s Alumni Services, the event featured the HSU Jazz Ensemble playing music of the Big Band Era, and payed tribute to veterans and current servicemen and servicewomen. Refreshments and a “cozy” campfire were also provided.

Reddie for Henderson

Several hundred high school students visited the Henderson campus on Nov. 6 to get a taste of college life.

“Reddie for Henderson Day” gives seniors an opportunity to meet current students, tour the campus, visit with academic departments and receive information on admissions, financial aid, housing opportunities and non-academic organizations.

Seniors and their parents heard about the many outstanding programs and opportunities Henderson has to offer.

Event honors Percy Malone

Henderson State University and Clark County said “thank you” to State Sen. Percy Malone Wednesday for his many years of service to his constituents, the community and the State of Arkansas. Friends and colleagues gathered at Henderson to pay tribute to Malone whose term expires in two months following 18 years of service as an elected official.

Malone, an Arkadelphia pharmacist and businessman, was elected to the state House of Representatives in 1995, and moved on to the Senate in 2001.
