Director of Athletics Kale Gober will be leaving Henderson State University later this month to accept a position with the University of Arkansas. Gober, who has led the HSU athletics program since August 2010, has been hired as the assistant athletic director for development.
Henderson president Glen Jones commended Gober’s leadership for the department, which has seen a significant period of growth and success under Gober’s tenure.
“Kale has been a dynamic administrator for Henderson State,” said Jones. “His commitment to the coaches and students is evident by the achievements on and off the field. In spring of 2012, more than 50 percent of our student athletes had a 3.0 GPA or better. We wish him well in his new appointment at the University of Arkansas.”
During the three years Gober served as director, private donations to Henderson’s athletic department have tripled and corporate partnerships have increased five-fold. In 2011, Gober secured private funding and sponsorships for a state-of-the-art, artificial playing surface at Carpenter-Haygood Stadium, which was spearheaded by the second-largest private gift in the department’s history. Other facility improvements include Dee White Field, a new scoreboard in the Duke Wells Center, Clyde Berry Field, the men’s basketball locker room and a donor room.
“I was blessed with this opportunity three years ago and I can truly say that I have given Henderson State my all,” Gober said. “The best is yet to come for Reddie athletics, and it is 100 percent because of the coaches and staff in place. I can’t thank them enough.”
Gober oversaw the university’s transition from the Gulf South Conference to the Great American Conference. Henderson is coming off its most successful football season in school history. In 2012, the Reddies had an unbeaten and untied regular season for the first time in school history. In addition, the Reddies hosted a NCAA Division II playoff game; also a first in school history.
A former three-year letterman for the Reddies football team, Gober was also an Academic All-Gulf South Conference selection. Prior to his tenure at Henderson, Gober was a development associate and assistant to the athletics director at the University of Central Arkansas.
Jones said the university would immediately launch a search for the position of director of athletics.
