Spring commencement May 9

graduation_cap_and_diplomaSpring commencement ceremonies will be held at Henderson State University Friday, May 9, with approximately 440 undergraduate and graduate students receiving their degrees.

The ceremony for the School of Business and Teachers College, Henderson, will begin at 3 p.m. in the Wells Center gymnasium, followed at 6 p.m. by the ceremony for the Ellis College of Arts and Sciences.

Dr. Sherece Y. West-Scantlebury, president and CEO of the Winthrop Rockefeller Foundation, will speak at both ceremonies.

Faculty charges will be presented by Dr. Mike Kelly, chair and associate professor of counselor education, and Paul Williamson, professor of psychology. Student responses will be given by Omni Kelly of Little Rock and Cheyenne Derr of Hunnington. Henderson President Dr. Glen Jones will confer the degrees.

Dr. Sherece Y. West-Scantlebury
West is president and CEO of the Winthrop Rockefeller Foundation, a private, independent foundation whose mission is to improve the lives of all Arkansans in three interrelated areas: economic development; education; and economic, racial and social justice.

Involved in philanthropy for more than 20 years, West served as CEO at the Foundation for Louisiana and as a program associate at the Annie E. Casey Foundation. Her professional career includes nearly 30 years of experience in community development, public policy and advocacy, and public service.

In addition to running the Winthrop Rockefeller Foundation, West is active in a number of nonprofits and philanthropy organizations.

She earned her Ph.D. in public policy from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, and her M.A. in public policy from the University of Michigan Gerald R. Ford School of Public Policy in Ann Arbor. West received her B.A. from Bowie State University in Maryland.
